President Signs Helium Stewardship Act of 2013; Shutdown of Federal Helium Reserve Is Averted - October 2, 2013
President Obama today signed into law the Helium Stewardship Act of 2013, representing the end of a long series of actions by U.S. Senate and House to reach a solution that avoids a shutdown of the Federal Helium Reserve.
Congress and the President acted in time to avoid a severe jolt in the already sensitive helium market, sidestepping a potential shock to businesses and jobs in the balloon industry and thousands of other businesses in technology, health care and research which rely on helium.
Senate Votes 97 to 2 in Favor of Legislation to Extend Operation of the Helium Reserve - September 19, 2013
The U.S. Senate today overwhelmingly approved legislation that brings us one step closer to ensuring uninterrupted operation of the Federal Helium Reserve in the face of an imminent shutdown under current law.
By a vote of 97 to 2, the Senate recognized the critical nature of maintaining a stable supply of helium for a wide range of industries across America including manufacturing of semiconductors, MRI machines, research, fiber optic cable, plasma televisions and balloons.
House Subcommittee Hearing on Options for Expanding Helium Production - July 10, 2013
Tomorrow, the House Natural Resources Committee's Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources will look beyond the immediate issue of extending operation of the Federal Helium Reserve and hold a hearing to look at options for expanding production of helium to increase supply.
The hearing, entitled "America's Helium Supply: Options for Producing more Helium from Federal Lands," is expected to include testimony from representatives of the Bureau of Land Management, a natural gas exploration and production company, a helium exploration company and a researcher.
Senate Hearing on Helium Legislation - May 6, 2013
The U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee will hold a hearing on May 7th to consider testimony on S. 783, Helium Stewardship Act of 2013. The Committee will hear testimony from witnesses representing the Bureau of Land Management, which operates the Federal Helium Reserve; specialty gas companies - including one on the pipeline to the Reserve and one that is not on the pipeline; and from the semiconductor industry and academic researchers who utilize helium in their work.
House Passes Legislation to Extend Operation of the Helium Reserve; Attention Turns to Senate - April 26, 2013
The House of Representatives today has passed H.R. 527, "The Responsible Helium Administration and Stewardship Act," with overwhelming bipartisan support - 394 "Yes" votes and only one "No" vote.
The bill provides for the continued operation of the Federal Helium Reserve beyond the sunset mandated under current law, breaking up the transition to privatization into three phases. The bill intends to bring market stability and ensure continuous access of helium to both industrial and commercial users.
House Committee Approves Bipartisan Bill to Extend Operation of Federal Helium Reserve - March 25, 2013
The House Natural Resources Committee adopted an amended version of H.R. 527, the "Responsible Helium Administration and Stewardship Act," in a voice vote with no audible abstentions.
The bill will now move to the full House of Representatives for consideration. Timing for action has not yet been determined. Congress is currently in a spring recess and returns to session on April 8.

Congress Introduces Bill and Holds Hearing to Extend Operation of Federal Helium Reserve - February 25, 2013
The last Congress closed its session without taking action to extend the operation of the Federal Helium Reserve past its anticipated sunset date, expected later in 2013 when the Reserve's debt is paid off.
With the new session less than two months old, the House of Representatives is already taking steps to extend the Reserve's operation. Through media reports, Senate leaders have also recognized the urgency for action.

Across the country, the balloon industry is one of several sectors of the economy feeling the effects of the helium shortage and instability in the helium market. Between higher prices and lack of supply, the helium shortage is a real problem that will continue to cause unpredictable disruptions to our businesses.
